September, Month of Alchemy - Vivien Schapera

For Vivien, September is a magical month. In Cape Town, in the southern hemisphere, September was the month when the fruit trees would blossom, a brief but magnificent display. In the northern hemisphere, September holds a very interesting paradox.

September is the month that heralds the fall, traditionally associated with the ending of the old, followed by a time of dormancy, the winter. Yet, September is also the month of new beginnings, because September is when the new academic year begins, ushering in heightened activity and the cultivation of the mind.

Whether in the southern hemisphere or northern hemisphere, September is usually the month of the Jewish New Year, and also, without exception, the month of the Equinox. Whether they are part of our personal belief system or not, these two festivals hold age-old places in the collective unconscious. Additionally, both these dates offer us ceremonies that generate portals. Specifically, these portals invite us to transition consciously to the next stage of our life journey.

In the USA, September was the month Vivien and Neil would go to Denver, host to a large gem show, to indulge their passion. On their most recent trip to Colorado, Vivien and Neil decided not to restrict themselves to one passion but to indulge all three of them!

First, they visited the gem show to shop for crystal inventory. Even though a buying trip is hard work, the minerals make it worth it. It is hard to explain how crystals affect those who have an affinity for them. Perhaps it is comparable to loving dogs. Those who get it, get it big and for those who don’t, the charm remains a mystery. Essentially, there is an energy that emanates from the crystals that supports our souls. Vivien’s teacher Melody referred to this energy as “Love,” and just like with dogs, it certainly feels that way.

Next, Vivien and Neil visited the exceptionally lovely Denver Botanical Gardens. The highlights were the serene water lily pond, the Chihuly glass sculpture, the moon gate and the stunning plant scenes. Needless to say, for Vivien and Neil, this experience also spoke to their souls. They were utterly enchanted!

Third, Vivien and Neil went hiking with their childhood friends in the Rocky Mountains. What could be more archetypal than that? The sheer wonder of Nature was on full display. The wild flowers, trees and mountains provided the perfect contrast to the urban landscapes. They truly were at the top of the world, looking down on Creation.

“Awe-inspiring” is the word that comes to mind, but it is the personal response that is so important, because this is the environment that makes Vivien and Neil’s hearts sing. What about you? What makes your heart sing? And what does September mean to you?
