The RV Book Fair 2026: Interview with J.M. Shaw

J.M., what drew you to writing fantasy and creating imaginary worlds?

I’ve always gravitated toward superheroes, whose abilities make them different. Fantasy and its magical systems are easily comparable, with characters whose abilities likewise set them apart. In both genres, I empathize with the protagonists because, as a neurodivergent mind in a neurotypical world, I share similar challenges and insecurities. Yet, while I struggle to adapt, these fictional characters find ways to embrace their differences and make something good of themselves. Such stories suggest that my disparity might not be a flaw, giving me hope that if I could only discover my purpose, I, too, might find my niche.

Writing fantasy allows me to explore identity, power, and self-discovery. It is my sanctuary, where I can imagine a world in which differences aren’t flaws, but strengths waiting to be claimed, proving that I’m not broken, just a little lost.

Callum faces very human struggles like belonging and self-acceptance.

How important is that emotional connection in fantasy?

Readers may never wield magic, battle monsters, or travel to new worlds, but most understand what it feels like to struggle with belonging, self-acceptance, fear, or uncertainty. That understanding is what draws them into a story because they can empathize with the characters. And it is why emotional connection is essential.

How much of your own personality or experiences make their way into your characters?

All my characters are entirely fictional. Still, it’s impossible not to insert pieces of my own personality into my characters. Though I never set out to write a protagonist based on myself or anyone else I know, stepping back, it’s clear how some of my personal traits—mannerisms, hopes, dreams, and sense of humour—have bled into my characters.  

After four books in the Callum Walker Series, how do you keep the story and the world feeling fresh?

Much of my inspiration comes from past experiences and simply observing the world around me. I'm constantly asking outlandish "what if" questions and trying to answer them through my stories. And though each book builds on the previous one, I often discover new story ideas while I'm writing my current tale. That spontaneity allows the world and characters to continue evolving and keeps my creativity fresh.

Your books blend magic with mythology. Where do you find inspiration for the creatures and supernatural elements in your stories?

Reading fuels my creativity. Which is why I read a lot of fantasy, adventure, and science fiction, not for specific ideas, but because they are the type of stories I enjoy. I also spend time researching myths, legends, and folklore. I’m constantly gathering interesting concepts, tucking them away for future adventures, and adapting them to fit the world and story I’m creating.

J. M. Shaw is a Canadian author of fantasy fiction who lives in Alberta with her husband and two young children. She’s been writing since childhood, building worlds from raw imagination and quiet observation, but it took years before she found the courage to share them. For Shaw, storytelling has always been more than a passion. It’s a compass. A sanctuary. A way to make sense of the chaos.

In 2019, Shaw was diagnosed with autism and ADHD, a turning point that brought clarity to a lifetime of feeling “too much” or “too different.” Her intense focus, emotional depth, and ability to live inside fictional worlds became not flaws but the superpowers of a neurodivergent mind. These qualities shape her stories, infusing them with realism, heart, and meaning, and giving her the courage to finally share her creative works. Her worlds may be fantastical, but her characters—flawed, searching, and deeply human—resonate on a personal level. When she’s not writing, Shaw enjoys connecting with nature, curling up with a good book, and dreaming up new worlds. She also finds joy in encouraging young writers to pursue their own passions.
