The RV Book Fair 2026: Interview with T.K. Bush

After more than two decades working in healthcare, what inspired you to pursue your lifelong dream of becoming a novelist?

I've been writing stories for as long as I can remember and dreamed of becoming an author as a child. As I got older, life and the demands of my career took over, and I had less time to write. But after almost ten years working in the cardiac cath field, I found my way back to writing and started my first novel. I realized I still had the passion, but I needed help, so I attended my first writers' conference. There, I found a community that understood my journey and met the mentor who helped me complete my debut novel.

Your debut novel, "Unveiled," blends romance, psychological suspense, and medical drama. What inspired this story, and why did you choose these genres?

I've always enjoyed writing romance stories with a little suspense. As a child, I was a hopeless romantic and loved heartfelt love stories. As I got older, my stories took on a darker tone when I realized real life isn't always as perfect as the movies. I became more interested in the drama behind love and relationships and how people heal from difficult experiences. That eventually led me to writing psychological thrillers like Unveiled. My background in cardiac medicine also became a natural part of the story, allowing me to write about a world I know and add realistic medical situations.

Your medical background adds a strong sense of realism to your writing. How has your experience in healthcare influenced your characters and the situations they face?

My experience in healthcare has taught me how people react under pressure. I often think about being scrubbed in during a heart attack procedure, knowing a life could be lost while trying to remain calm and focused despite the adrenaline. I bring those experiences into my writing, not only through accurate medical details, but also in how my characters respond to difficult situations. I use some of the same techniques I've learned to remain calm and in control in real life to help my characters navigate their own challenges.

The heroine, Tessa Brooks, must confront both lost memories and dangerous secrets. Without giving away spoilers, what makes her such a compelling character?

Tessa is relatable. She's simply trying to do her job to the best of her ability and take care of her family while pieces of her past begin to resurface. And like many of us, she has a past she'd rather leave behind. By watching her face one of the most difficult times in her life, I think readers can see a little of themselves in her and maybe even find strength for the difficult times in their own lives.

Many aspiring writers dream of publishing their first novel. What has surprised you the most about the journey from idea to publication?

Writing a novel was much harder than I expected. I used to write short stories and poems all the time. I would sit down, write them, and be done. A novel is completely different. I loved creating the idea, the characters, and imagining what would happen, but weaving it all together into a complete story was a much bigger challenge than I expected. I was also surprised by the marketing side of publishing and how important building a reputable platform has become. But the biggest surprise was how my story evolved. My characters grew in ways I never expected, and the ending turned out completely different from what I had originally planned. Looking back, I couldn't be happier with the result.

Relationships play a central role in your work. How do you create emotionally authentic characters that readers can connect with?

I think readers connect with my characters because they mirror real-life emotions and situations. The circumstances may be fictional, but the feelings are real. Stories give us a window into another world where we can watch how different choices play out. Some characters choose forgiveness and healing, while others hold on to their hurt, and I think it's important for readers to see the consequences of both. Personally, writing has helped me work through some of my own experiences. I've found that my characters sometimes discover healing before I do. My hope is that readers will see a little of themselves in my characters, watch them find healing, and realize that healing is possible for them too.

Writing psychological suspense requires balancing emotion with tension. How do you keep readers turning the pages while still developing your characters?

I think suspense and character development naturally work together. When readers can put themselves in a character's situation, they begin to wonder what they would do and keep reading to see if the character makes a similar choice. When they don't, or they do something unexpected, it makes the story even more intriguing because now you have to know why. I plan some of those moments, but my characters surprise me too, and that's one of my favorite parts of writing. Somehow, I get to create the story while also watching it unfold, and those unexpected choices almost always change where I thought the story was going.

You've said that none of us are perfect and that forgiveness brings peace. How has your own life shaped that philosophy?

I think I really began to understand forgiveness when I chose to forgive. It wasn't easy, and I can't say I've arrived at a place of complete understanding or that I couldn't struggle with unforgiveness again. But through different situations in my life, I've gained a deeper understanding of what it means to let go. At one point, I had the opportunity to ask questions and seek the closure I thought I needed, but I realized that knowing the answers wouldn't change what had happened. I chose not to chase closure. I forgave and moved on, and I felt a sense of relief. It wasn't a total, life-altering peace, but I had peace with that situation. That experience taught me that sometimes forgiveness is simply choosing to stop looking back and allowing yourself to move forward.

What projects are you working on now, and what can readers look forward to after Unveiled?

I'm currently working on my next romantic suspense novel, which explores betrayal, unexpected relationships, and the choices we make when we've been hurt. Like Unveiled, readers can expect emotional characters and plenty of suspense.
